CENTRAL COUNTY, Pennsylvania (WTAJ) – Of 8 schools nationwide, the Bald Eagle Region School District was selected to be part of an award-winning author’s virtual tour for children.
As the National Ambassador for Children’s Literature through the Library of Congress, Jason Reynolds visits small town schools across America to have meaningful conversations with youth about literacy.
Zoom calling students in grades 6 through 12 to BEASD, Reyonld’s even promised one-on-one meetings with two student ambassadors, 9th grader Sawyer Andrews and 10th grader Alice Crane.
âI already know the questions I want to ask him. I’m very excited, very nervous, but overall it’s supposed to be really fun, so I can’t wait, âAndrews said just before his one-on-one.
As for those students to thank for making this all possible, their English teacher, Amy Nearhoof. The school was selected for Reynolds’ Virtual Tour after entering an essay competition with over 200 applicants.
“I told the kids that it didn’t even occur to me that we would be chosen, did it?” It was just one of those moon shooting stuff. As a teacher you want the learning to be done in 3D so it was kind of like he said no, if we don’t understand nothing is lost⦠and so that was really cool â , said Nearhoof.
As well as getting the chance to hear about Reynolds’ life and how he got to writing in the first place, the author also gave each student a free novel to take home.
âI think the books he handed out were really great, I haven’t started reading them yet but I’m going to get down to them soon,â Andrews said.
